Mesothelioma Attorneys

Mesothelioma is a fatal disease caused by exposure to asbestos. A rare form of cancer, mesothelioma affects the mesothelial cells around the heart, lungs, or abdominal organs. The most common type of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma, affects the pleura, a thin membrane between the lungs and the chest cavity. Sufferers of pleural mesothelioma can experience symptoms that include the following:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Persistent coughing
  • Chest pains
  • Weight loss
  • Trouble swallowing

The types of mesothelioma include the following:

  • Peritoneal mesothelioma: This form of cancer affects the peritoneum membrane of the abdomen. These tumors can also be found in the stomach and abdominal organs.
  • Pericardial mesothelioma: This form of cancer affects the tissue and cavity surrounding the heart
  • Pleural mesothelioma: This form of cancer attacks the lungs and respiratory area. It attacks the cells and the lining, called the pleura, of the lungs and ribs.
  • Tunica vaginalis mesothelioma (or testicular mesothelioma): This form of the disease affects a layer of tissue surrounding the testis in males

Latency period is very long

Mesothelioma does not manifest itself for years following the exposure to asbestos. It is not unusual for cases to be diagnosed as long as 50 years after exposure to asbestos. This long latency period makes it not only difficult to diagnose, but difficult to treat. Often the disease has spread too far to be treated effectively once it is detected. The average survival time after detection is one to two years.
